Secondary Drama INSET Summer 08

Raising GCSE Attainment 2:
CHARACTER FORMING
Tuesday 20th May 2008
Stratford Circus
9am – 4pm

From Level 1 (“Pretend to be a character) to Exceptional Performance (‘Create … and sustain a range of complex characters in performance’)*, the ability to play a role with conviction and imagination is a fundamental Drama skill. This practical, one day course will explore how to teach characterisation as a tool for raising attainment in all aspects of the KS3 and KS4 curriculum: process, reflection and evaluation as well as in performance.

The course will provide a range of strategies and new ideas for a systematic approach to, and progressive acquisition of characterisation skills including:

  • Working in role
  • Evaluating and reflecting in role
  • Developing empathy
  • Applying different approaches to character to raise attainment and improve understanding of theatre history
  • Physical transformation

Course leader:
Joss Bennathan is author of Developing Drama Skills 11 – 14’ and editor of ‘Performance Power’.  Apart from his work around the country as a drama in education advisor, Joss is also a theatre director who works with both professional actors and with vocational training courses, youth and community groups in the UK and USA.  Joss is Artistic Director of Present Moment and Associate Director of Arc Theatre

Price per one day course:  £125 including course notes and buffet lunch. To be paid by cheque, made payable to Stratford Circus Ltd.
